Travelers on the Western Highway
, 40 minutes from
Melbourne
admire the famous Avenue of Honour of giant elms at Bacchus Marsh, winding past
market gardens and orchards in a beautiful valley. The Gisborne exit from the
town or freeway leads to Bacchus Marsh Golf Club in the picturesque valley below
the
Lerderderg
Ranges
and Gorge - Melways Ref: 327 G9. Apart from the formation of Bacchus Marsh Golf
Club on April 23, 1907, the most important date in the club's history is May 10,
1972. On that night, a resolution was carried to buy 110 acres of land (later
increased) and with a water entitlement for $40,000 on
Links Road
. From 1907 until then, the club had operated on several sites, mainly the local
Racecourse Reserve on sand scrapes, battling the area's dry climate, without
security or ownership. A local property owner, Mr. Tom Swan was Club President
and the driving force behind the move to establish a fully watered, 18 hole
course, on the club's own land, five kilometers' from the town, off Gisborne
Road. The land had been farm land with historical links to Captain William Henry
Bacchus. Mr. Swan donated the cost of the course design by Kevin Hartley for
Golf & Recreation Planners Pty. Ltd.
A relatively small, enthusiastic group of members provided the debentures to buy
the land, and attend working bees to plant thousands of trees and help with the
installation of the watering system and course construction. The course was
officially opened on 24 March 1974, by Mr. Cec Evans of the VGA, the clubhouse
opened on 19 April 1975. Tom Swan became a Life Member, having led the
transformation of a barren landscape to a par 72 undulating course, playable all
year. Today the course is surrounded by modern housing developments with the
licensed club providing all facilities, bistro, bar, pro shop etc. The 30th
anniversary of the course opening was celebrated in 1974, with displays of
memorabilia, photos and history at a special dinner. The club's centenary
celebrations are planned for April 2007.
Life Members elected prior to 1972 were M. Malone, A. Baxter and J.H. Thomas,
then Tom Swan who was President for three years, Mrs. Dorrie Sweet, Tom Hill,
Mrs. June Myers, Mrs. Norma Durham, Lionel Holt, David Ford, Peter Parry &
Gabe Dellios.
